Power Naps Are My Heroes

7:48 AM

One of the best things my husband has taught me is how to take a power nap. He is a pro at them. He can fall asleep SO fast, and when he wakes up naturally, he gets up and moves on. To me, a nap has always meant 2 hours of falling dead asleep and making the most of it. It was a beautiful thing that was planned for and could not be interrupted. Somehow over the past 4.5 years, I have started running low on 2 hour blocks of time, but still need a pick me up some days (most days!). This is when falling asleep for 15-20 minutes tops makes all the difference.

Lately about halfway through Milo's nap time and an hour into my study/work time, my brain starts feeling foggy and I can tell I'm not retaining anything. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that I cannot function well without sleep or without food. All it takes is 15 minutes (somehow I always fall asleep fast when I'm not really supposed to, whereas at nighttime I'm a lifetime insomniac), no alarm (I'm a light sleeper- if I don't wake up on my own after 15-20 minutes, it's a good sign I was sleep deprived anyway and I'll wake up when Milo does! But surprisingly this doesn't happen too often.) and I'm good to go, productive again, and refreshed for the rest of the afternoon. Sundays are a different story. You better believe I will hold onto my long Sunday naps for as long as I possibly can, even if they make it hard to fall asleep Sunday night.

So take a power nap today. And every day. I used to at lunch when I worked full time and didn't have a babe, and I still do it now. Those little things are lifesavers!

  1. I used to only nap if it meant 2 hours too but now I lay down with our 2 year old until she falls asleep which usually results in me falling asleep with her. I wake up after about 15-20 minutes and I'm good to go! It's amazing, yes?! Now if only I could get a handle on Jillian not keeping is up til 11:30 every night, I might have a chance of waking up in time each morning to start our days!!!
