My Favorite Things

11:41 PM

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a weird eater. I'd rather eat small things a lot of times a day than big amounts of food just a few times a day (mostly because I like eating). I have an aversion to meat. I love sauce and things with tons of flavor. I crave sugar and salt like nobody's business. Throughout the ongoing process of cleaning up my eating, I've come across some foods that I absolutely love and live on:

1. Frozen grapes. Fruity, healthy, and sweet. Just wash them, stem them, and put them in the freezer. They totally kick the sugar craving to the curb.

2. Popchips! Tons of flavors with only 120 calories in 23. Salt craving done and done.

3. Pureed frozen bananas. My husband makes fun of me every time I make these, and then gets jealous every time he tastes it. Cut and freeze some bananas (peel them first- learned this from experience), throw them in the blender until smooth, and voila. When you get the hankering for some ice cream, try and decide if this would do the trick. 9 times out of 10, it works like a charm.

4. Air-popped popcorn. Please don't judge me right now because, believe me, I know how weird this sounds. I use popcorn as a carrier for when I want the flavor of some kind of sauce but don't want to pair it with chips or something higher in calories. I can be found putting hot sauce on my popcorn on a regular basis. Try it before you make fun of me.

5. Yogurt. I eat yogurt every day. My favorite kind is CarbMaster cherry flavored from Kroger. It's low in sugar and high in protein, and it's way cheaper than greek yogurt. If nothing else, it offsets the candy I eat throughout the rest of the day. And since I don't eat meat, it helps me get enough protein in my diet. Plus, the protein fills you up and helps refuel your muscles after a workout. It's also a great smoothie base!

6. Rice cakes. Not the highest in nutrients, but these are my go-to when I'm wanting something Mexican-tasting again, without the calories of chips. Black beans and salsa on a couple of rice cakes is a perfect snack. The black beans fill you up and the salsa makes your taste buds happy.

7. Crystal light. Sometimes I mistake hunger for thirst. When I need to hydrate but want some flavor, I throw in a crystal light packet. I know the world is kind of on the fence about artificial sweeteners, but if it keeps me from drinking soda that could pass as carbonated corn syrup, I'll take it.

8. Zucchini pizza. Grilled zucchini, marinara sauce, and low fat cheese. Love it. So does the hubs.

9. Salad. I know I'm all about the carriers, but add some combination of beans, cheese, boiled egg, tomatoes, just enough delicious and low fat dressing, and a little something crunchy on top and you can make a nutritious meal out of it.

10. Fruit. Easy to carry, no utensils necessary, doesn't need refrigeration. Common and maybe a no-brainer, but never underestimate the power of a crisp apple or juicy grapefruit.

What are your go-to foods when you're trying to keep it pure?
